This week we will start our Unit on Representing Multiplication & Division. The learning goals are:
-Apply the meaning of multiplication as the total number of items in equal groups.
-Represent multiplication as repeated addition on a number line.
-Use the sharing meaning of division to solve simple division problems.
-Use the grouping meaning of division to solve simple division problems.
Please also see "Sum it Up" for this weeks lessons for more information:
Lesson 1 https://mathup.ca/ui/LessonDetail/Mini%20Lesson/4/8850/118/644
Lesson 2 https://mathup.ca/ui/LessonDetail/Mini%20Lesson/4/8850/118/645
Lesson 3 https://mathup.ca/ui/LessonDetail/Mini%20Lesson/4/8850/118/646
Lesson 4 https://mathup.ca/ui/LessonDetail/Mini%20Lesson/4/8850/118/647
These lessons may go into the following week as well depending on how the students respond. Practicing basic multiplication at home would help students with this unit. One of the curriculum expectations for Grade 3 is: multiply to 7 x 7 and divide to 49 ÷ 7, using a variety of mental strategies (e.g., doubles, doubles plus another set, skip counting).
In Language we have been working on making inferences by using our schema (background and prior knowledge) and clues from the text. We have also been reading and writing persuasive texts.
In music, students have started to compose their own rhythms. We will continue to work on these compositions this week.
Mr. Sidwell (student teacher) is teaching a mini unit on Global Perspectives on Wednesdays through reading various books that explore multiculturalism and diversity.
The students are very excited about their snowshoe field trip! We hope to get in a practice in the school yard before the big day. Thank you for sending in both permission forms and please continue to send in if you haven't already.
Important Dates:
Feb 6 - Library book exchange
Feb 14 - PD day
Feb 20 - Snowshoe in Gatineau Park
